Fille avec au Parapluie Noir sur la Pont Neuf, Paris

Fille avec au Parapluie Noir sur la Pont Neuf, Paris

Fille avec au Parapluie Noir sur la Pont Neuf, Paris

Girl with black umbrella on the Pont Neuf Bridge, Paris. Oil on canvas by François Gall. An elegant woman on a bridge over the river Seine. The painting is difficult to shoot.  It’s more subdued and a bit darker than most. Gall was obviously trying to capture the cloudy, rainy day, hence the umbrella and the shadows on her face. The canvas is not in perfect shape – some crazing and slightly loose on the stretcher. Thin paint, tiny canvas buckle upper centre, a bit dirty and unvarnished. However, it’s a wonderful Gall that is so “Paris” in the period of the 1950s. I have a letter from his daughter, Marie-Lise Gall explaining the painting and dating it 1950. Frame is painted carved wood with motley painted texture that shows wear but still quite serviceable. The inner frame is missing some paint. I’ve tried my best to photograph it as it looks. $3,200. Frame size: 18″ H x 16″ W. Canvas size: 10.75″ H x 9″ W. Wt: 4.0 lb. 1.8 kg.

Café en Paris – Lady in Blue

Oil on canvas – Café en Paris – Lady in Blue, by Francois Gall 1912-1987. A painting of his wife, Eugènie (his favourite subject). Circa 1950s. Always great composition with emphasis on the foreground vs background.  More control in the foreground More impressionist in the background. Nicely framed with gold and burnished with slight red/brown tinge. Tiny paint spots and a couple of bits of paint missing on the upper edge of the canvas – does not affect the painting. Signed lower left “F. Gall” in red. Label on the back from Carel Gallery, Miami Beach, Florida. Frame size: 19″ H x 17″ W. Canvas size: 10.5″ H x 8.5″ W. Near perfect condition.
